  17. Your technical adviser is most likely wrong. While I have used a V.34 
  18. modem on a 16450 (no deep buffering) successfully in a non-Windows
  19. non-multitasking environment, I did experience some dropped characters 
  20. (quite a few) and some serial port overruns. I also had to limit the port 
  21. speed to 57600 and could not easily transfer highly compressible files 
  22. without a lot of errors.

  24. Suggestion: upgrade to the 16550 or a 16650 (32 byte buffer).
